What gear do I need?
Minimal. I recommend the ATR-2100 mic by Audiotechnica, which works with a traditional mixer or the USB port on your computer. Audacity editing software is free. Libsyn podcast hosting (which I use) is less than the price of a small pizza every month. You can spend more, but why would you? You need a computer, a way to record yourself and others and an Internet connection. If your record in-the-field, a basic digital audio recorder would come in handy.
Can I host my own podcast?
You could, but why run the risk of slowing down your website when downloads of your show increase? It is much safer to host with a dedicated podcast company with all the safeguards built in. You set up the automatic distribution options, and every post gets to all your social media destinations AT THE CLICK OF A BUTTON. Set it and forget it. That’s worth $5 a month!
How much will it cost to podcast?
There are many variables, but a minimal setup will cost about $100. You can spend much more, but you can get a professional sound with quality equipment that has been dropping in price. For example, the ATR-2100 dynamic mic, which can be used with a mixer or plugged right into your computer’s USB port, is about $65 USD. You can use free editing software, and your monthly hosting fee is less than the price of a large pizza. You can design your own graphics free on Canva. It does not cost anything to put your show in the Apple podcast directory (or others for that matter). How sweet is that??
Do I need to be a tech geek to work this?
So-called experts make it far more complicated than it really is. It all boils down to four basic steps:
1. Create digital media.
2. Get it online.
3. Make it podcast-ready.
4. Share with the world.
That’s it. The tech piece is EASY. Yes, some detail work is involved, but people from non-tech backgrounds all over the world have successfully launched their own shows. You can too! What you really need to spend time on is thinking about your goals and how to reach the people you want to reach.
